Eye Care Basics

The first thing you should know about your eyes is that your vision, and problems that may occur with age, has a lot to do with genetics. Therefore, it is worthwhile to find out about your family history with regards to eyesight and vision concerns. However, there are also environmental and other factors that can contribute to the health of your eyes. Since the environmental factors are something that you have control over, you want to learn what these are and what you can do to reduce your risks of developing issues in the future.

What you consume does matter

You've probably heard as a child that you should eat your carrots because they are good for your eyes. While this is true, there are many other types of foods that also benefit the health and well-being of your eyes. Fish high in fatty omega-3s and green leafy vegetables like kale and spinach are also important to your eyes. You should also be taking a good multivitamin each day to ensure that your entire body is getting everything that it isn't receiving from your daily diet habits.

The air around you can affect your eyes

You may have noticed that your eyes feel itchy and they can even be red, swollen, and watery on certain days. This can be due to high winds and/or the pollen and other allergens that are in the air. Taking antihistamines can help to cut down on allergies, thus making your eyes feel better. However, there is only so much they can do, so you want to do your best to control the air and the rest of the environment around you. Clean your air filter for your HVAC system regularly, keep your windows closed on windy days, and limit your time outdoors during allergy season to help prevent bad allergy symptoms from kicking in.

You can get ill through your eyes

You want to make sure you always wash your hands before touching your eyes or putting in contacts. Otherwise, there is a chance that you will increase your risk of getting sick by transferring germs from your hands into your eyes. Just one example of an illness you can get is conjunctivitis, commonly known as "pink eye." However, you can also catch colds and other sicknesses by touching your eyes. This is also why it is important for you to make sure you don't share eye care products or makeup that goes near your eyes.

Your choice of glasses is important

If you do need prescription eyeglasses, you can go with different options that will help to make wearing them easier. You can have tinting put on them, so they double as sunglasses. You can also go with glasses that have bifocal lenses in them, which makes them double as reading glasses. You can even have a scratch resistant coating put on your glasses.
